Jon Batiste on the Flow State of Creating 3 Albums at Once and Piano as a Form of Meditation
Grammy winner Jon Batiste speaks with ‘CBS Mornings’ about his three new albums, which were inspired by composers Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Thelonious Monk, and explains how he crafted each one in a single day.
The Power of the Flow State
According to Batiste, the key to creating multiple albums in a short span of time lies in entering a state of flow, a mental state characterized by heightened focus and productivity.
‘When I’m in the flow state, I feel like I can do anything,’ Batiste said. ‘It’s like my mind is completely focused on the music, and I’m not thinking about anything else.’
Piano as a Form of Meditation
Batiste also credits his piano playing as a form of meditation, helping him to clear his mind and find inspiration.
‘Playing the piano is like a form of meditation for me,’ Batiste explained. ‘It helps me to calm down and focus my mind.’
The Inspiration Behind the Albums
Batiste’s three new albums were inspired by the works of Mozart and Monk, two of the most influential composers in jazz history.
‘I’ve always been fascinated by the music of Mozart and Monk,’ Batiste said. ‘Their music is like nothing else – it’s like a fusion of classical and jazz that’s both timeless and innovative.’
A Personal Update
Batiste also gave an update on his wife, who is battling cancer.
‘My wife is going through a tough time right now,’ Batiste said. ‘But I’m trying to stay positive and focus on the music.’
