Back to School: Easy and Affordable Lunch Ideas for Kids
As the new school year begins, many parents are wondering how to make packing a healthy and affordable lunch for their kids easier. Registered dietitian Megan McNamee shares her top tips to help you get started.
Plan Ahead
Before you start packing lunches, take some time to plan out your child’s meals for the week. Consider their schedule, dietary restrictions, and personal preferences. You can also involve your child in the planning process to get them excited about their lunches.
Use a Variety of Ingredients
A well-rounded lunch should include a variety of ingredients such as protein, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Try to include a source of protein like turkey, ham, or peanut butter, along with whole grain bread or crackers, and a variety of fruits and vegetables.
Make Use of Leftovers
One of the easiest ways to save time and money is to make use of leftovers. Use last night’s dinner as a packable lunch the next day, or freeze individual portions of meals for up to 3 months.
Get Creative with Containers
Use creative containers to make packing lunches more fun and engaging. Try using reusable bags, containers, or wraps to add a personal touch to your child’s lunch.
Stay Hydrated
Don’t forget to include a drink in your child’s lunch. Encourage them to drink water throughout the day, and consider packing a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated.
