Jacob Misiorowski becomes second-fastest pitcher in history to tally 200 strikeouts in a single season

Milwaukee Brewers starter Jacob Misiorowski became the second-fastest pitcher to reach 200 strikeouts in a season on Sunday.

The Brewers ace managed the feat in 129 1/3 innings this season. He entered Sunday's start against the Minnesota Twins with 195 strikeouts.

Misiorowski struck out Twins outfielder Alan Roden for his fifth strikeout of the game, officially reaching 200. While he is the second-fastest to the mark all-time, he obliterated the Milwaukee franchise record.

Corbin Burnes struck out 200 batters in 145 2/3 innings in 2021. With this new record, Misiorowski is the ninth Brewers pitcher to ever tally 200 strikeouts in a single season.

While it is impressive that Misiorowski accomplished the feat in 129 1/3 innings, that gets him second place all-time. The top spot belongs to Atlanta Braves pitcher Spencer Strider, who struck out 200 hitters in 123 1/3 innings in 2023. Strider finished his 2023 campaign with 281 total strikeouts.

While both Misiorowski and Strider had speed on their side when reaching 200 strikeouts, both had plenty of work left if they hoped to sniff the single-season strikeout record.

Nolan Ryan struck out 383 batters in 1973, throwing 326 innings. It is considered the Major League record despite seven pitchers reportedly throwing between 385 and 513 strikeouts in a season in the 1880s.

Misiorowski's Sunday start marks the 118th game of the Brewers' season. With 44 games left in the regular season, Misiorowski could make an estimated eight starts down the stretch of the season.

Mathematically, it would be historic if the Milwaukee ace managed to catch Ryan, but with his current pace, he still could end up with impressive numbers in his second big league season.

Misiorowski was pulled from Sunday's game after six innings. He allowed three earned runs on four hits. Misiorowski earned a no-decision, but finished with nine strikeouts. He now has 204 on the season.
