Commanders Pro Bowl LT Laremy Tunsil out indefinitely after tearing triceps in training camp

One of the top left tackles in the NFL won’t be playing for a while.

Washington Commanders Pro Bowler Laremy Tunsil tore his triceps during training camp on Saturday and will likely require surgery, causing him to miss at least a significant portion of the regular season according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafalo.

Tunsil reportedly sustained the injury in a 1-on-1 drill while taking on a bull rush from Odafe Oweh, who joined the Commanders on a four-year, $100 million contract in free agency this offseason.

The Commanders also paid up with Tunsil this offseason, signing him to a two-year, $60.2 million contract extension in March that made him the highest paid offensive tackle in the NFL by average annual value.

Tunsil is entering his second season with the Commanders after joining them last summer via a blockbuster trade with the Houston Texans. Pro Football Focus ranked him as the third-best pass blocker at the position in his first season.

The Commanders are now left to figure out how they will protect star quarterback Jayden Daniels in 2026. ESPN’s Adam Schefter quickly pointed to veteran Andrew Wylie as the next man up at left tackle while Josh Conerly Jr. remains at right tackle. Brandon Coleman, the Commanders’ former starter at LT, also got starts there when Tunsil was injured last season, but has been making the transition to guard.

Washington has a little more than a month to figure that out, with their season-opener scheduled for Sept. 13 against the Philadelphia Eagles.
