Bryson DeChambeau leads LIV Golf players-only meeting at Trump Bedminster as questions about league's future remain
LIV Golf members held a players-only meeting at Trump National Bedminster on Tuesday amid further speculation about the league's future.
Bryson DeChambeau, according to The Athletic's Gabby Herzig, led the charge in the get-together.
The extended players meeting happened after a meeting between players and LIV Golf executives, including CEO Scott O'Neil. Few players revealed what happened at either meeting.
"Bryson just ran through what he knows, and obviously, we're trying to do it as a group, but we're individuals as well, so I think the next two to three weeks is going to be where it's at," Richard Bland told The Athletic. "We're in this together; we're fully backing Scott. I think probably in the next two to three weeks we'll have a bigger picture.
"We're just in that kind of stage at the minute that we're positive with what's going on, but we just need everything to be fully signed off so you can go forward."
The status of LIV Golf's team championship event in Michigan later this month is still unknown, too. There have been rumors that the event is going to be canceled altogether, and preparations for the tournament at The Cardinal, including building basic grandstands and other infrastructure, have not yet started.
Sources told The Athletic that no decision and announcement on that event, scheduled to start Aug. 27, is expected this week.
"We've been told to prepare as though it's going ahead," Cameron Smith said on Tuesday. "So we're expecting it to happen. I'm really unsure, but we had a great year there last year in Detroit, and we're hoping to get back there."
LIV Golf's future has been in doubt ever since Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund announced earlier this year that it would stop backing the league after the 2026 season. The PIF has reportedly already invested more than $5 billion into LIV Golf, but the venture has struggled to gain traction and retain golfers.
O'Neil and LIV Golf are trying to move forward with a "LIV 2.0" plan and find investors to keep the league going. They have been looking to raise up to $250 million for next season, and are reportedly already running on loans for the rest of the 2026 campaign. The organization, however, has already informed employees of potential mass layoffs and laid the groundwork for a potential U.S. bankruptcy.
There have been multiple lawsuits filed against LIV Golf in recent weeks, including one that accused it of stealing the idea for the league. The Asian Tour opted to leave its deal with LIV Golf and partner back up with the PGA Tour and DP World Tour, too, something that reportedly caught O'Neil and LIV Golf by surprise.
There are three tournaments left in the 2026 season, starting with this week's event in New Jersey. What happens next season and beyond is still very much in doubt. And with little clarity apparently coming out of the two meetings Tuesday, it doesn't seem like an answer on that front is coming anytime soon, either.
