Giants CF Harrison Bader further injures already ailing foot in scooter accident, needs MRI
The injury to San Francisco Giants center fielder Harrison Bader’s left foot was made worse over the weekend due to a scooter accident.
The Giants announced the news in an injury update Tuesday.
Bader, who hasn’t played since May 29, has been dealing with plantar fasciitis in his left foot and had a meeting scheduled with a specialist in Indianapolis on Monday to evaluate the injury.
But before the meeting, Bader was involved in the scooter accident sometime Saturday night or early Sunday morning and “further injured his same foot.” Per the Giants, the accident “complicated” Bader’s meeting with the specialist, and “the impact of that injury changed the nature of his evaluation.”
Bader returned to San Francisco Monday to be further evaluated by team doctor Ken Akizuki and is scheduled to undergo an MRI. The Giants didn’t offer any further details regarding the nature of his injury or the accident that caused it. When he’s able to return to baseball remains a mystery.
The incident provides further frustration for a Giants season that’s been filled with disappointment from a 45-61 record on the field to controversy off it.
Bader, 32, joined the Giants as a free agent in the offseason on a two-year, $20.5 million contract. A former Gold Glover who remains an above average defender, Bader was projected to provide stability in the outfield for San Francisco and decent production at the plate.
Instead, Bader’s played just 30 games this season and was in the midst of the worst offensive campaign of his 10-season career before he was sidelined. With the Giants, Bader is slashing .170/.298/.358 with 5 home runs, 14 RBI and no stolen bases. Now it’s unclear when he’ll play baseball again.
As for the Giants, they enter Monday with the third-worst record in the National League and are expected to be sellers at the trade deadline.
