Reds P Caleb Ferguson apologizes for comments directed at umpire Bill Miller: 'Very unprofessional on my part'

Cincinnati Reds pitcher Caleb Ferguson has issued an apology to umpire Bill Miller for the heated comments the reliever made on the mound Monday that were captured on the game's broadcast.

"Don't feel great about it for sure. Definitely pretty uncharacteristic for myself. As long as I have been in this game I don't know if you will find a clip of me going at an umpire like that. Definitely going to have to wear that one on the chest.

Going to seek Bill out, going to try to at some point. Definitely make it right with him cause very unprofessional on my part.

Nothing you can do with it now, but just have to move on. I know Bill's doing his best to not be in his way in that situation, so I've got to be better on my part too."

The reliever laid into the umpire on Monday night after it appeared Miller got in the way of Edwin Arroyo, preventing him from making a play. The broadcast caught him saying an expletive-heavy comment where he insulted Miller's size.

Ferguson was frustrated with his performance on the mound. When he came into the game, there were two runners on with one out in the inning. The Reds opted to intentionally walk Dominic Canzone to load the bases. Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh made him pay for it and hit a grand slam, putting the Mariners up 7-0 at the time.

After Ferguson got an out, the incident with Miller occurred. No more runs were plated, but it did extend the inning by one extra batter. The reliever got out of it by striking out Luke Raley, but the damage both on the scoreboard and social media had been done.

Ferguson's final line of the night was 0.2 innings, 3 hits, 2 earned runs, 1 walk and 1 strikeout.

The reliever apologized for his comments, even saying that he hoped to catch Miller before the night's game to apologize in person.
