Panthers rookie WR Chris Brazzell to miss up to 8 weeks with LCL tear after training camp injury

Carolina Panthers wide receiver Chris Brazzell II will have to wait a bit to make his NFL debut.

Brazzell limped off the field and was carted to the locker room during training camp on Wednesday after going down on a noncontact play during 7-on-7 drills. According to both ESPN and The Athletic, Brazzell sustained a moderate lateral collateral ligament tear in his left knee. 

He's now expected to be sidelined for up to eight weeks. If that's the case, Brazzell could be ready for the team's Week 3 matchup against the Cleveland Browns.

"It was just something that just started to get sore after the first couple of days. He mentioned it to us. We started to look at it," Panthers coach Dave Canales said. "We put him through some good recovery stuff and de-loaded him for a couple days. Got him back out there and he couldn't finish the day."

Brazzell also missed two practices earlier in training camp with left knee soreness. 

The Panthers selected Brazzell in the third round of the draft earlier this year out of Tennessee. He racked up 1,017 yards and an SEC-best nine touchdowns on 62 catches last season with the Volunteers. 

Brazzell is just the latest Panthers player to go down with an injury already in training camp. Pass rusher Nic Scourton went down with a torn ACL on the first day of camp last week, which triggered an NFLPA investigation. Tight end Mitchell Evans was carted off the field on Tuesday with a minor ankle injury, and offensive lineman Taylor Moton was sidelined with a blood clot.

The Panthers, who won the NFC South last season for the first time in a decade, will start the season against the Chicago Bears on Sept. 13.
