Kyle Shanahan reportedly had cell phone in hand at time of car crash, but was found not at fault for wreck

A database of car collisions in California claimed San Francisco 49ers head coach was not at fault for the car crash that prevented him from participating in training camp, per multiple reports.

Using the California Crash Reporting System, both Sports Illustrated and the San Francisco Chronicle were able to look up more details from the crash the involved the 49ers’ head coach.

While that database revealed Shanahan was reportedly holding and using his cell phone just before the crash, the coach was not considered at fault. It was determined that the 21-year-old woman driving the other car reportedly made an unsafe turn, resulting in the crash.

The database does not contain names of the drivers. Still, both Sports Illustrated and the San Francisco Chronicle reported that neither party was cited or under the influence during the crash. Air bags deployed on both vehicles and both drivers — who were found to be wearing seatbelts — sustained injuries due to the incident.

Shanahan reportedly sustained a broken nose, multiple broken ribs and a broken hand. He also sustained a severe concussion, per ESPN. Though Shanahan has not taken part in training camp just yet, he’s expected to be healthy enough to coach the 49ers in Week 1.

It’s unclear what injuries the woman sustained in the crash. It was initially reported that the woman was unhurt.

Shanahan, 46, is set to kick off his 10th season as the 49ers’ head coach. The team has experienced plenty of success under Shanahan, who has gone 82-67 since taking over as its head coach.

Despite making it to the Super Bowl twice, Shanahan is still searching for his first championship as a head coach.
