Brooks Koepka withdraws from the Rocket Classic, hurting his bid to make the FedExCup playoffs

Brooks Koepka won't be competing in the Rocket Classic this week after all.

Koepka withdrew from the PGA Tour event on Tuesday with no reason given. Ben Silverman was added to the field at the Detroit Golf Club in his place.

Koepka returned to the PGA Tour this season after a stint with LIV Golf. He has made the cut in 10 of his 15 starts this season, and his best finish came in a T9 outing at the Cognizant Classic in March. He missed the cut at the U.S. Open and Scottish Open, however, and went T28 at the British Open two weeks ago. 

Koepka's withdrawal puts him in a tough spot for the FedExCup playoffs. The Wyndham Championship next week in North Carolina will wrap up the Tour's regular season. From there, only the top 70 in the FedExCup standings will advance to the FedEx St. Jude Championship. 

Koepka, who is No. 113 in the Official World Golf Rankings, entered this week at No. 84 in the FedExCup standings. Without earning any points this week, he will have to mount a big finish next week if he's going to make the playoffs. 

Scottie Scheffler will enter the playoffs at No. 1 in the FedExCup race. He's nearly 1,000 points ahead of Matt Fitzpatrick in second. Cameron Young, who's in third, is the only other golfer with more than 3,000 points.

Koepka has won nine times in his PGA Tour career, most recently at the 2023 PGA Championship.

Young is the betting favorite this week in Detroit, via BetMGM. There are several other big names competing, too, including Chris Gotterup, Xander Schauffele and last week's winner, Jackson Koivun.
