Marlins lose 12th straight game, still searching for first win after All-Star break

The Miami Marlins were one of the hottest teams in baseball in June and early July. The franchise was 27-34 on June 1, went 19-7 that month, and was 46-41 on July 1.

By July 9, the Marlins were riding a six-game winning streak and had a 52-42 record, improving to 25-8 since June 1.

Miami then lost 3-1 to the Cleveland Guardians on July 10, a defeat that led to a three-game sweep right before the All-Star break. Still, the Marlins were one of the hottest teams in baseball heading into the break.

The extra time off seemed to have been too much for the franchise to handle. Miami is still searching for its first win since the All-Star break, having lost all nine games the team has played since.

Sunday’s 5-3 loss to the San Diego Padres was the 12th consecutive loss for the Marlins and dropped them to a 52-54 record. They are now in fourth place in the NL East and the lone team that has not won a game since the All-Star break.

Miami has not only lost 12 straight games but has also been swept in four straight three-game series. 12 games marks the longest losing streak in franchise history, per Jordan McPherson.

The change in fortunes could drastically change how the Marlins approach the upcoming trade deadline on August 3. When the team was surging, an argument could easily have been made for them to be buyers at the deadline to capitalize on the momentum the team had built.

Now, with no momentum to speak of and one of the worst losing streaks this season, Miami will likely find itself in a familiar position of selling at the deadline.

The Marlins will now hope to finally notch a win in the second half of the season in their upcoming three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies.
