Jackson Koivun fends off Scottie Scheffler to earn first career PGA Tour win at 3M Open

Jackson Koivun, just 24 days into his professional career, is already a winner on the PGA Tour.

The 21-year-old rookie successfully fended off top-ranked Scottie Scheffler at TPC Twin Cities on Sunday afternoon to secure the 3M Open title. Koivun, who only shed his amateur status earlier this month, fired a bogey-free 66 in the final round. That got him to 25-under on the week, which set a new tournament scoring record and was enough to pick up the three-shot win in Blaine, Minnesota.

The victory, in just his third PGA Tour start as a pro, also earned him a $1.584 million check.

Naturally, that led to a pretty emotional moment on the final green after his par save.

Koivun built up a three-shot lead after a historic Moving Day. The rookie posted a 28 on his back nine on Saturday, which set a tournament record for that half of the course, and led to his 10-under 61. That sent Koivun to 20-under on the week and put him well ahead of the rest of the field. 

Scheffler, after hanging around the first three days, was six back in a tie for ninth.

But Scheffler wasted no time narrowing that gap. He birdied his first hole of the day, and then made three straight birdies at the turn to get within three. Scheffler was draining putts again, too, an issue that was plaguing him in both Europe stops earlier this month. The top-ranked golfer couldn’t buy a deep putt throughout nearly the entire British Open, something that likely would have pushed him to another major championship win.

Koivun was the top-ranked amateur player in the world before he turned pro after the U.S. Open. He won two national team titles at Auburn, and swept the major awards before finishing T23 at Shinnecock Hills. Koivin finished T10 at the ISCO Championship a few weeks ago, too. The transition to pro hasn’t seemed to bother him one bit, and he opened the week with a 64 on Thursday before backing it up with a 68 the following day.

And, while Scheffler was cruising ahead of him, Koivun was locked in on Sunday. He stuck his approach on the first hole just about a foot from the cup for an early birdie, and he hit a ridiculous 21 straight greens in regulation dating back to the third round before finally missing one.

Koivun pushed his lead to four after a perfect up-and-down save from the bunker at the par-5 12th, too. He just never wavered.

Scheffler birdied the final hole to wrap up his 63 and get to 22-under on the week. At the time, that cut Koivun’s lead down to just two.

But Koivun left himself with an eagle look at the 16th, and settled with a simple birdie to extend his lead once again. That was more than enough to solidify his win, though he did pull out the shortest drive of the week at the 18th after he just missed. For the first time all day, he finally looked relatable.

Scheffler has now finished in second five times on Tour this season. He didn’t get the win again this weekend, but Scheffler’s putting game appears to be in a much better spot after what’s been a disappointing stretch for him — at least, by his standards. The top-ranked golfer in the world missed his first cut in years at the Scottish Open, and he only has a single win this season. That came back in January. If Scheffler can’t win another time before the end of the year, it’ll mark his first season without multiple wins since 2021. He won a combined 13 tournaments during the 2024 and 2025 campaigns. 

Scheffler has a little bit of time left to win again in 2026, and he’s leading the FedExCup standings race, too.

Yet for now, not even a month into his professional career, it’s Koivun’s turn. His PGA Tour career is off and running.
