Sprinter Justin Robinson gets DQ'd at USATF National Championships for lane violation after winning 400m event

It looked like Justin Robinson had just become a national champion, winning the 400-meter race.

After a video review, though, Robinson was shown to have stepped on the line between lanes three times. This was ruled a lane violation, and according to World Athletics Technical Rule 17, it resulted in an automatic disqualification at the USA track and field championships on Satuday in New York.

With Robinson's 44.31-second time disqualified, Chris Bailey ended up the winner of the race, finishing in 44.39 seconds.

This new result moved Khaleb McRae (44.41) into second and Noah Williams (45.25) into third place.

The sprinter's camp is protesting the decision, and it will be reviewed further. For now, though, Bailey is the winner of the event, which qualifies him for the World Athletics Championships.

Robinson is currently ranked by World Athletics as the 57th best 400m male sprinter. Over the course of his career, he has been as high as 15th. His performance on Saturday could have helped increase his ranking since, before his DQ, he had run a personal best time.

The sprinter has found the most success as part of a 4x400 relay team. Robinson won gold in the event at the 2023 World Championships, 2026 World Indoor Championships and the 2019 Pan American U20 Championships.

As a singles competitor, he took gold in the 400 race at the 2019 Pan American U20 Championships and bronze at the 2019 Pan American Games.

With the DQ, Robinson's chances of qualifying for the World Athletics Championships are very limited. His best chance of competing at the event would be if he is named to the 4x400 relay team.
